Havana Club International is excited to reveal the winner of the Havana Club Gap Year, a global campaign to find an open-minded and fun-loving individual to go on an all-expenses paid 365 day adventure, visiting 12 countries and living 12 unforgettable experiences.
Julián Medina from Colombia is the winner of the Havana Club Gap Year 2013. He competed against 17 finalists from different countries around the world in Havana this week. They were each tasked with creating a short film that captured the spirit of the unique city. A panel of judges, including winner of ‘The Best Job in the World’ Ben Southall and Cuban film directors Juan Carlos Tabio and Pavel Giroud, determined the winner based on their creativity, individuality and personality.
Julián Medina is the perfect winner.
Julián studied Finance and International Trade but now he is a chef and restaurant owner in Bogotá Colombia, he owns Mexican, Japanese, Chinese and Hamburger restaurants. His passion for food, photography and travelling made him the right person to win the Havana Club Gap Year.
Julián will now embark on his 12-month adventure, starting in the Cuban capital where he’ll soak up Havana’s incomparable way of life and polish his cocktail skills alongside authentic Cuban bartenders. He will head to Buenos Aires to hone his photography skills; he will travel across Canada with a jazz band; he will get to the heart of Berlin’s creative communities and much more.
Director of Communication at Havana Club International and Havana Club Gap Year judge, Francois Renié: “We’re delighted to be able to give someone the opportunity to travel the world the Havana way. It’s much more than an extended holiday; it’s a life changing experience. Julián’s enthusiasm and desire to travel was evident throughout his stay in Havana and his video truly captured the spirit of the city. We’re excited to see how this once in a lifetime experience unfolds over the next 12 months.”
Winner Julián Medina commented: “I'm still shocked about winning a competition that is going to take me around the world, living like a local and getting to experience the most amazing activities. It is a life changing experience. I can't wait to get to Argentina where I'll be going around Buenos Aires with a photographer or taking the Trans-siberian train for a month!”
Julián will be keeping a travelling blog on the Havana Club Facebook page throughout his journey, which will be regularly updated with photos, interviews and videos from each place he visits and the experiences he has along the way. It really will be a ‘go to’ blog for all travellers looking to navigate the world like a local. To follow Julián’s blog, visit http://the-havana-club-gap-year.tumblr.com/.
